Hi, Navio here.
Japan is all about weird *and of course* cool monsters.
Can you name some of Japanese monsters?
How about a real-life monster?
Nope, nope, nope, nope.
Have you ever heard of Japanese spider crab?
Located in one corner of the saltwater aquariums, the Japanese spider crabs are being put in the same aquarium with 3 different sea creatures, two different kind of fishes, and some kind of lobsters.
Anyway, we are going to discuss about the crab more.
The *gigantic* Japanese spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi), is categorized in the arthropod group, which able to reach the size of 3.8 meters long and weighing up to 19 kilograms!
高脚蟹 (Takaashigani) is the Japanese word for this crab, literally meaning Long-legged crab.
Yep, their legs are enormously long.
They can be found both in the shallow or in the deeper part of the ocean, but they are more likely to inhabit holes in the deeper part.
Poor fishes.
They must be so afraid to be in the same tank with these ferocious looking monsters!
No wonder they keep on swimming faraway from the crabs.
And it looks like that Japanese people eat them.
Here’s a photo I took in Kyoto.
You can also see big Japanese spider crab decorations on the top of 看板料理 かにすき かに麺楽 (Kanban ryouri kanisuki Kani Menraku) chains spread all around Japan.
By any chance, have you ever seen any of them?
