Craving for fried chicken and mayo-based sauce?
Want to have a rich and heartful lunch?
Try to look for a nanban chicken in a small restaurant.

The restaurant Ichibanboshi in Fukagawa we presented last month is specialised in Fukagawa meshi, but offers also a wide range of hearty Japanese soul foods like chicken nanban.

Chicken nanban is a dish composed from fried chicken dipped into light vinegar saucejust as it’s been fried, then topped with a “tartar sauce” made with mayonnaise, onion and other condiments.

There’s also rice and miso soup as side dishes.
Well, it’s not the healthiest menu you can have, but who cares! It tastes delicious!
The balance between the fried chicken and the slightly sour mayo sauce is very good!
Basically, chicken nanban is a dish from Miyazaki prefecture in southern Japan, but you’ll find it anywhere in the country.
