Obviously, the access to the top of the volcano is only allowed for certain periods of the year depending on the weather conditions. Yet, if you have the opportunity to go to the southern island of Japan (Kyushu) and you want to experience the beauty of mother nature, Mount Aso is definitely a destination you should consider.

In fact, Mount Aso is a group of 5 volcanic peaks : Mount Naka or Nakadane, the one at the center ; Mount Taka, that culminates above all; and the three remaining, Mount Eboshi ; Mount Kishima and Mount Neko.

Another important feature of this Volcano is the « caldera » that surrounds it. But you probably have never heard about this term, haven't you ? A caldera is a huge circular depression made by a volcanic eruption. As a result, the magma chamber becomes empty, thus creating the collapse of the ground. It often appears like a gigantic circular plate below the sea level.

At the bottom of Aso's peaks, lies in one of the largest caldera of the world with a perimeter of 130 km. Small cities, farms, woods and hot springs spankle this massive stretch. If you pay close attention, you will be able to tell the difference between the floor's layers on the edge of the grassy meadow.

Access

Located 50 km away from Kumamoto station, Aso JR station will be reachable within 1h20 by bus « Limited Express Aso Boy » or 1h35 by train. In the latter case, even though it costs about half the price (1210 yen instead of 2240 yen) you will have to do a transfer on the way. But, keep in mind that both are covered by JR pass. From Aso Station to Nakadane, the bus' line is called « Aso Crater Line ». At the last stop, several souvenir shops are available, so it will be a chance to get some rest, but also food and goodies. The volcano's museum is, however, located downhill near Kusenri plains (草千里), so you could also check that out, especially if the road leading to the summit is closed.

If you are lucky enough, the access to the summit will be opened, allowing you to witness the grandeur of the panorama. In order to get there, you will have to take a cable car, from which you can to contemplate a great view while ascending. Once your feet are back on the ground, a hiking track will lead you to the crater before going downhill to the gorge of Sensuikyo.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, the access to the crater depends on the weather. Not only the smoke, but also the gases brought back by the wind may be disturbances. So even though, it could seem to be accessible, it would be risky for your health. Before engaging to this trip, please check their website.
