At the end of May, the beginning of June, a special season comes in Japan: Tsuyu (梅雨), the name for the rainy season in Japanese!

The weather turns very humid and rainy for a good while because two different air masses across Asia meet right above Japan.

The Chinese characters used are “plum” and “rain” (梅雨).

It’s simply because this is the season when plums are ready to be collected.

The rain might be annoying when walking outside, but this is essential water to help to harvest delicious rice later and water many plants.

Flowers that like rain and humid weather like hortensia and iris are in their best condition, and many beautiful gardens all over Japan celebrate them during this period.

There are also many goods sold to solve the high humidity, like special detergents to avoid smelly laundry, super-strong hair care products to fix girls’ hairstyle, and fashionable rain boots!
