Okada Museum of Art is an art museum located in Kowakudani, Hakone. It has the largest indoor gallery in Hakone, and mainly exhibits Japanese, Chinese, and Korean works of art, from ancient period to modern artworks. While enjoying the hot foot bath, visitors can admire artworks. The museum's most significant artwork is the entrance wall of the huge wind and thunder gods. Whether it's the museum's Japanese-style restaurant or its enormous garden, Okada Museum of Art has a lot to give.

The Okada Museum of Art opened in Kowakudani, Hakone in 2013. It was constructed on the site of the old Kaikatei hotel built in the Meiji period for Westerners. The museum is a five-story building, having an impressive exhibition space of around 5,000㎡. It exhibits over 450 Japanese, Chinese and Korean works of art ranging from ancient times through to the present age.Above all, for its huge wind and thunder gods entrance mural, one masterpiece captured the attention of art enthusiasts: the 12 m x 30 m "Wind / Time" by Japanese-style painter Fukui Kotaro. Furthermore, tourists can enjoy walking through the comprehensive 15,000m2 gardens on site where they can appreciate the landscapes of four seasons in harmony with nature. (admission fee: 300 yen). It takes about 40 minutes to walk around the garden.

Highlights of Okada Museum of Art

The Okada Museum of Art offers Japanese and Asian art. It displays Japanese paintings by Ogata Korin, Katsushika Hokusai, Yokoyama Taikan, and a collection of ceramics mainly from Japan, Korea and China. Archeological artifacts like Jomon clayware and earthen figures can also be found. Buddhist artwork (statues, paintings) and crafts such as parts of lacquerwork, jade and metalwork are also available.The collection of the museum, as well as the areas it includes, is useful and expansive in its temporal reach. You can love walking through the vast gardens where you can appreciate the four-season landscape in harmony with the nature of Hakone.The museum also has food shops where, while having a meal, you can see the perspective of the garden. There are foot baths with free-flowing water from the warm springs at the front of the building. At the front of the building, visitors can relax their feet and soak in the foot baths while enjoying the magnificent "Wind / Time" wall.

Opening hours are 9:00~17:00 (Last admission: 30 minutes before closing). Closing days: 31st Dec, 1st Jan, closed occasionally for exhibition renewal. Admission fee is 2,800 yen (2,550 yen) for adults/university students and 1,800 yen (1,550 yen) for elementary/junior high/high school students. () Is the fee for advance tickets mainly sold at convenience stores. Recording devices such as mobile phones, cameras and tablets and also beverages are not allowed to be brought into the museum galleries. To access the Okada Museum of Art, take the Hakone Tozan Train at Odawara Station and get off at Hakone-Yumoto Station. Change to the Izu Hakone bus or the Hakone Tozan Bus (about 20 minutes) and get off at Kowaki-en stop, followed by a short walk.
