Kamakura Hiking Trails: Explore a Route compassing Tourist Spots

Kamakura Prefecture of Kanagawa is famous as a historic town among visitors. In Kamakura there are many shrines and temples. In addition to historic architecture, there are also places near the ocean where you can enjoy swimming and hiking. We would like to implement some suggested hiking classes that will allow you to visit historic sites along the manner.

Kamakura Hiking Trails

There are several hiking trails in Kamakura. Various classes are available, ranging from simple to expert. Natural mountain paths are the hiking trails. Equipment such as climbing shoes and hiking clothes will be needed. Below are three main classes for hiking.

Ten-en Hiking Course

The hiking course of ten-en is about 7 km long. It's for individuals with powerful legs and physical strength confidence. Due to its difference in altitude from beginning to end, there is a mountain ridge route called "Kamakura Alps." While wandering along, you can appreciate nature.

Daibutsu Hiking Course

"Daibutsu Hiking Course" is about 3km long. The path runs through the famous Great Buddha, shrines and temples. It is recommended as you can visit tourist spots along the way.

Gionyama Hiking Course

The “Gionyama Hiking Course” is a 1.5km route to Gionyama. There is an observation deck at the top of the mountain where you can enjoy the view of Kamakura. 

Highlights of hiking trails

There is a "Kamakura Alps" hill ridge trail along the "Ten-en Hiking Course," which you can appreciate the view of Kamakura's cityscape and sea view along this full-fledged trail. "Daibutsu Hiking Course" is a path running through Kamakura's renowned Great Buddha. It is appealing because the seasonal flowers and trees that color the temple can be enjoyed, such as plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, hydrangea and autumn leaves. Also the "Gionyama Hiking Course" has seasonal flowers along its path such as plum blossoms, narcissus, hydrangeas and autumn leaves. The view from Gionyama's top is fantastic as well. For those who want to understand Kamakura's history as it goes through Kamakura's historical locations, this course is suggested.

Access to hiking courses

It is best to reach the entrance of the hiking courses by walking from the nearest train station. Each hiking course has several entrances, but we will only focus on the main entrances here. "Imaizumidai Jutakuchi-iriguchi", the entrance to "Tenen Hiking Course", has a 40-minute walking distance from JR “Kita-kamakura Station”. "Jochiji-iriguchi", the entrance to “Daibutsu Hiking Course", has a 15-minute walking distance from JR “Kita-kamakura Station”. "Yakumoeki-iriguchi", the entrance to “Gionyama Hiking Course”, has a 15-minute walking distance from JR “Kamakura Station”.
