Minamisanriku in Sanriku, Japan: a seaside village with plenty of nature

Minamisanriku is a town living with the ocean in Sanriku. The local fishing port unloads fresh seafood. About Minamisanriku, Sanriku

Minamisanriku is located in the northeastern part of Miyagi Prefecture. The city faces Shizugawa Bay and Isatomae-wan, thriving in its fishing industry. However, because of the nature of its sawtooth shoreline, this region has been destroyed by tsunami for many years. Therefore, the city has constantly made a lot of attempts in operations to prevent and restore catastrophe. Public facilities in the city offer free Wi-Fi.

Minamisanriku Tsunami

Minamisanriku suffered a major tsunami hit in the 2011 earthquake. 620 people died and 213 people were missing. A tsunami wave with a height of 15.5m hit the town. There are images that were recorded on the day of the earthquake showing how buildings and trees were swallowed by the tsunami.

Minamisanriku disaster emergency center

The Minamisanriku disaster prevention center is a ruin of earthquake in Shizugawa district of Minamisanriku. During the Great East Japan Earthquake, a 15.5m tsunami wave hit the government building with a height of 12m. Only its framework remained after the attack of the tsunami.

Minamisanriku Sun Sun Shopping Village

The shopping village was built by a group of local shop owners who were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. It was established as a temporary shopping village in 2012 and became a permanent one in 2017. The shopping village is a symbol of disaster restoration. At the village, you can purchase and attempt local specialties as well.

Shokuraku Shiosai

You can enjoy the specialty of octopus dishes in Shokuraku Shiosai. A famous menu that can even be handed out is Takotsubo Ramen. Minamisanriku is also famous for its kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl) called "Kirakira-don", which means the "sparkling rice bowl" since it uses plenty of fresh local seafood. Don't forget to try this "Kirakira-don" when you come to this restaurant.

Access to Minamisanriku, Sanriku

The simplest way is to ride on an expressway bus to go to Minamisanriku. There are six expressway buses operating daily  going from Sendai Station to Minamisanriku. The stops in the town are Shitsugawa Station (BRT) and Utatsu-Masuzawa. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

You can also take trains and route buses or drive to reach Sanriku.
