Rafting Downstream at Historic Hozugawa
The shipping downstream began from good transporting to Kyoto and Osaka which are at downstream by using the water current flow of Hozugawa. The water transportation has a long history, where wood, rice, charcoal, etc were sent through Hozugawa. Due to the development of truck transport after the world war, the use of cargo vessel to send goods by river has gradually decreased, instead the boat service of transferring tourist to downstream has begun.
The current Hozugawa rafting downstream course is a course of about 16 kilometers from Kameoka to Arashiyama in approximately 1.5 to 2.0 hours, and is crowded with tourists who want to enjoy the beautiful scenery every season.
How to Take Boat of Hozugawa Kudari
The regular shared boat to Hozugawa downstream operates from 10th March to early December. The private boat need to be reserved at the port directly. Group bookings can be made for the group of more than 10 people. Reservations can be made one year in advance. The boat operated 7 times a day with interval 1 hour each from 9:00 to 15:30 on weekdays. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays the boat will operate occasionally.
In winter, the boat with Zashiki and heater is operated from early December to 9th March. Since you can sit directly on the carpet of this boat, you can experience differently as the vibration of the waves is transmitted directly to your body. Reservations can be made from minimum one person one year in advance. The boat operated 6 times a day with interval 1 hour each from 9:00 to 14:30 on weekdays. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays the boat will operate occasionally.
First, one of the group representatives have to fill in the form for address, name and number at "Hozugawa Kudari boarding platform". Then, submit the filled up form at the reception and pay the boarding fee. After get the boarding ticket for boarding, wait until your number is called and board.
The rafting time is vary depending on the flow and volume of river, but it is usually approximately 90 minutes. The boat schedule will be canceled in case of a storm or water volume increase.
