What kind of city is Ginza?

© TCVB

Ginza is a city where you can feel the sophisticated atmosphere and history while tradition and the latest items and information are also mixed in. Originally, during the Edo period, a silver (銀 / gin) coin mint and the organization that managed it were located here, hence the name "Ginza". Western culture spread rapidly during the Meiji period, and it became the center of cutting-edge trends. Today, it is still lined with luxury stores and long-established department stores, and is known as one of Japan's leading shopping areas and tourist spots. On the other hand, Ginza's charm is its traditional streets and good old shops that remain. If you take a side street from the main street, you'll see retro street lamps lined up and you'll be able to enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere just by walking.
