Miyazaki Shrine, about a 20-minute drive from Miyazaki Station, is a historic shrine dedicated to Emperor Jimmu, the first emperor of Japan. About Miyazaki Shrine
A historical shrine with the first emperor of Japan, Emperor Jimmu, as the deity of the shrine. It is believed that when Takeiwatatsunomikoto, the grandson of Emperor Jimmu, became the Chokan of Kyushu, and started a religious ceremony in honor of his grandfather’s legacy. The Aiden on the right is Tamayorihime, the mother of the Emperor Jimmu, and the Aiden on the left is Ugayafukiaezunomikoto, the father. The grounds are made up of things such as Miyazaki Jingu Shrine, West Shinnen, and East Shinnen, and about 600,000 worshipers visit annually.
Highlights of Miyazaki Shrine
In the approach, there are a row of cedar trees, which are said to be over 400 years old, called Sanosugi, and the main shrine is built with only Sanosugi. A main shrine built with only cedar wood is said to be rare. In addition, at East Shinnen, there is a natural monument, Oshira Fuji, which is said to be over 400 years old.
On the first day of every month, there is a tradition of praying for the safety of the new moon, and on this day, there are more worshippers than usual. In addition to that, from 6 am, from midnight on New Year's Day, Sanpai Mochi is sold at Miyazaki Jingu Sando Rest House. Eating mochi has the meaning of wanting a long life by praying to Shofuku Josai. A box is 300 yen (2 per box, stops once it is sold out), and different kinds of mochi are sold monthly.
Miyazaki Jingu no Taisai
“Miyazaki Jingu no Taisai”, which is held on Saturdays and Sundays in late October, has a history of over 140 years, and is a festival popular with the locals, and has the alternate name of “Jimmu-sama”. From Miyazaki Shrine to the downtown area, people dressed in clothing of the time walk around. The “Shanshan Horse”, which carries the bride on a decorated horse, is also a parade feature.
In addition, on April 3rd, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, Yabusame festival is held, which is an event in which cavelier wearing Kamakura samurai costumes get up on galloping horses and shoot at targets. If they are able to hit a critical spot on the target, confetti gets scattered from it.
Access to Miyazaki Shrine
By bus, from Miyazaki Station, it is about 12 minutes by Miyazaki Kotsu, get off at the Miyazaki Jingu bus stop.
Or, about 18 minutes by Miyazaki Kotsu from "Miyako City", get off at the bus stop "Miyazaki Jingu". It is about 5 minutes on foot from bus stop "Miyazaki Jingu".
By train, get off at JR Miyazaki Jingu Station, and is about 10 minutes on foot from there.
