Kegon Falls, located in Nikko City of Tochigi Prefecture, is a waterfall of 97 meters high and 7 meters wide. It is a popular spot that many tourists from inside and outside the country visit to see the spectacular scenery of water flowing from the nearby Lake Chuzenji. You can enjoy fresh green leaves in the spring and summer, colorful autumn leaves in the fall, and enjoy the view of the frozen waterfall and snow scenery in the winter. Highlights of Nikko’s Kegon Falls

The highlight of Kegon Falls is the scenery of the vigorously flowing water from Lake Chuzenji. The nature of Nikko really brings out the powerful waterfall. The color of flowers such as the azaleas and cherry blossoms stands out in the spring. In the summer, there are greenery and cool winds, and the splashing waterfall help to alleviate the summer heat. In the early morning when it is clear out, you can even see a rainbow over the waterfall. The water flow is the greatest in the autumn, and you can see it flowing magnificently. The trees around the waterfall begin to change color from the middle of October, and it is the recommended season to see the combination of the beautiful autumn leaves with the waterfall. On cold mornings in the winter, you can see hoarfrost. When it gets even colder from late January to late February, the waterfall freezes over, creating numerous chandelier-like icicles. The small waterfall also freezes over, and the scene of the entire waterfall glazed in blue ice is amazing.

Recommended Viewing Spot of Kegon Falls 

Although Kegon Falls can be seen for free, the paid observation platform (observation platform) allows you to see the beautiful scenery from even closer. You can enjoy the powerful Kegon Falls. Use the dedicated elevator to get up to the observation platform. The round trip fare for the elevator 550 yen for adults (junior high school students and above), 330 yen for elementary school students, and free for younger. Business hours are from 8:00 to 17:00 (9:00 to 16:30 from December 1 to February 28. May vary depending on the season)

Access to Kegon Falls

From Tokyo Station go to Utsunomiya Station by Shinkansen. From Utsunomiya Station, get on JR Nikko Line and get off at Nikko Station. From JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station take the bus bound for Tobu Bus Chuzenji Onsen (approx. 40 minutes) and get off at "Chuzenji Onsen" stop. Kegon Falls is about 5 minutes on foot from there.
