If you find yourself wandering in the beautiful grounds of Imabari Castle, you will find a man riding on a magnificent horse.


His name is Todo Takatora, and he is the first Lord of Imabari City.

Todo Takatora began his journey from serving as an ashigaru (foot soldier) for Isono Kazumasa.


Subsequently after that, he fought in many battles and worked under seven feudal masters.


Being skilled in battle, he soon rose the ranks and became the chief retainer of Hashiba Hidenaga.

His skills however, is not limited to being capable in battle and warfare.


Todo Takatora was also a talented castle architect.


Owing to his experience in the battlefield, Todo Takatora was familiar with warfare strategies, and could provide input on how to built castles that could truly defend its occupants from a dangerous attack.


Some of his ideas included wider moats and steep, high stone walls.


These features are clearly shown when you visit Imabari Castle.

Some of the notable castles that Todo Takatora has built include the Imabari Castle in 1602, the Nikko Toshogu in 1617, and the Osaka Castle in 1620.
